Unidentified Magenta Ooze on Isolated Tasmanian Coast Raises Anxiety of Potential Algal Bloom

Authorities in the island state are striving to determine a pink slime that has appeared on a isolated coast, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an algal bloom.

Broad Presence Across Beaches

The rosy-colored ooze was found on a portion of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of the capital. A like substance has also been recorded on parts of another local beach and an additional coastal site.

Samples Collected for Analysis

Specimens have been collected and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A representative stated that "algal blooms are a normal phenomenon in response to changes in minerals, temperature, rain or light".

"The events are at times called reddish tides because the blooms can color the water red," the official added. "Not all phytoplankton events are toxic, with numerous types acting as a primary source of nourishment for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."

"The primary reason of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."

Rising Rate Associated with Climate Change

Algal blooms happen naturally but their occurrence has risen in recent years, partly due to climate change and pollution that combine to create nutrient-rich waters geared for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that typically serve as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a outbreak, there is a rapid growth in their colonies that disturbs the normal functioning of marine environments.

These events have been likened to subsurface wildfires and can keep expanding as long as the environment is suitable. In worse situations, delicate ocean habitats can be devastated as aquatic animals is destroyed or smothered, offering more nutrients for the proliferation.

Previous Catastrophic Event in South Australia

A southern state in the past dealt with a catastrophic phytoplankton proliferation along its southern shore after a succession of sea temperature spikes, which expanded across an extensive zone. The event caused beachgoers with sore eyes and hacking coughs and may have eliminated up to a quarter-million sea creatures across 400 different species, according to government calculations.

Expert Assessment on the Tasmanian Case

An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the onset of South Australia's algal bloom commented, based on images of the Tasmanian outbreak, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".

"There have been lots of these events around Tasmania of late," she added.

The expert said sea sparkle did not create poisons similar to the organism involved in South Australia's devastating outbreak, but it does ingest small invertebrates and "lots of fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.

"Typically one notices a proliferation of this algae after a bloom of a different species, or an event such as a fish reproduction," she added.

Demands for Response and Public Safety

Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, said it seemed the possible outbreak had "grown significantly" and indicated the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, citing comparable events overseas.

"Thus we needs to issue a strong warning here, the government and the EPA need to react to this. We need to study the specimens we've taken and we need to notify the people here," she said.

The scientist said she had worries for people's well-being after experiencing a numbness along her limbs and skin while being splashed with contaminated seawater.

Claims of Dead Animals and Appeals for Government Response

An advocacy organization has stated lifeless animals and deceased marine life washing ashore, with a veteran activist labeling the event as an "natural disaster" and calling on the state premier to see and "assume command the reaction that government must be undertaking".

"The leader needs to realize this is a catastrophe in the unfolding, financially as well as ecologically."

Government Reaction

Talking with reporters, the premier commented he was did not know of any relationships between the algae outbreak and the farming business, stating laboratory analysis was needed before conclusions could be drawn.

"We need to ensure our waterways are ecologically sound and long-lasting," he said.

"The 1,200 beaches across the island are our assets and we need to make sure the people and our economy can operate side-by-side to enjoy our aquatic resources effectively and sustainably."
