On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
