Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
