RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
